A New Cultural Landmark in Southeast Asia—The Application of Nedis Epoxy Terrazzo at Phnom Penh International Airport

2025-10-24

Light, as the fourth dimension of architecture, infuses space with depth, emotion, and vitality. In contemporary architectural design, thoughtfully integrating the relationships among light and space, light and form, light and color, as well as light and texture—and fully harnessing the ever-changing qualities of natural light—has become the very essence of modern architecture.

Dechong Airport Light Art Aesthetics

Cambodia's Phnom Penh International Airport, designed by Foster + Partners Foster + Partners ) is a masterpiece of craftsmanship, showcasing the exceptional performance of light within a large-scale architectural setting. At the heart of the project lies a strong sense of regional cultural identity, seamlessly blending modern airport functionality with the timeless wisdom of Khmer traditional architecture.

The most striking feature of the terminal building is its unique daylighting system. 180 meticulously arranged skylights, paired with a ceiling design inspired by Cambodia's traditional bamboo weaving techniques, create a luminous environment that seems to breathe.

This system not only solves the challenge of natural lighting in large-span spaces, but more importantly, it allows light to flow and shift throughout the space, creating a vibrant and dynamic spatial experience.

The modular "tree"-like structure not only supports the undulating roof but also works in harmony with the skylight system, allowing natural light to permeate every corner of the building. This design enables visitors, as they move through the space, to sense the subtle shifts in light and experience the passage of time embedded within the architecture.

Epoxy Terrazzo Light Collaborator

In the lighting system at Dechong Airport, Nedis epoxy terrazzo flooring plays a crucial role. This specialized material, with its unique properties, serves as an extension and elevation of architectural lighting design.

# Light color tones create a soft visual environment

The light-colored base tone of epoxy terrazzo makes it the ideal reflector of light in any space. Its surface efficiently bounces back most visible light, significantly enhancing illumination levels in the lower areas while reducing the energy demand for artificial lighting.

The high level of ground flatness ensures that light reflection directions are precisely controllable, preventing glare and creating a uniform, soft visual environment.

# Seamless surfaces create unique light-and-shadow effects

The seamless, monolithic nature of epoxy terrazzo ensures that light is projected across the floor without any interruptions from seams, creating a unified and continuous interplay of light and shadow. This pristine surface elevates the architectural expression of light and shadow, making it both purer and more dynamic.

When natural light streams through the skylight onto the floor, the epoxy terrazzo, with its delicate texture, gently diffuses the light, creating a uniquely charming interplay of shadows and highlights.

# Natural aggregates create rich spatial visual layers

Carefully proportioned natural stone aggregates act as the sculptors of light in epoxy terrazzo.

These aggregates create subtle textural variations under light, adding rich visual layers to the space. The combination of different particle sizes and colors allows the floor to not only reflect light but also reveal a unique aesthetic appeal in its texture.

# Unique performance makes it the top choice for airport ground operations

In other aspects, epoxy terrazzo also performs exceptionally well. Its eco-friendly properties meet green building standards, while its outstanding hardness and abrasion resistance ensure the flooring can withstand the high-intensity usage typical of airports. Additionally, its remarkably long service life and ease of cleaning and maintenance significantly reduce operational costs.

The lighting design practice at DeChong Airport showcases a key direction in contemporary architecture: in future buildings, the use of light will increasingly emphasize harmony with natural rhythms. Through precise optical design and innovative material applications, it will create spaces that are both energy-efficient, environmentally friendly, and emotionally evocative.

Nedis epoxy terrazzo precisely showcases its unique advantages in this very context. As an essential medium connecting light and space, it not only meets functional requirements but also opens up greater possibilities for the interplay of light and shadow in architectural design. Nedis is committed to walking hand-in-hand with the design community, exploring the aesthetic boundaries of architecture in every project and jointly crafting more inspiring spatial masterpieces.
