On the shores of Houhai in Shenzhen, a cluster of buildings resembling “raw stones by the sea” stands quietly—this is the Shenzhen Bay Cultural Plaza. As a flagship project showcasing cultural integration within the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area, it was conceived by Ma Yansong of MAD Architects, drawing inspiration from the phrase “when the water recedes, the rocks emerge.” Nine stone‑like structures are scattered throughout the green spaces, seamlessly blending with their surroundings. Since its opening, this open‑ended, three‑dimensional cultural hub has embodied Shenzhen’s original vision of becoming a “cultural nexus.”
Design Decoding
A dual breakthrough from architectural form to spatial organization.
The architecture is themed around the concept of “water recedes, stones emerge,” with irregular curved concrete surfaces that evoke the texture of natural weathering. Complemented by natural daylighting, rainwater harvesting, and a rooftop photovoltaic system, the building complex resembles an ecological organism that seems to “breathe.”
The aerial promenade links the commercial district with the park, while the sunken passageways connect to the green spaces. The 24-hour‑open Bay Passage blurs boundaries, transforming this area into a “cultural hub” that weaves together urban functions and fosters a seamless integration of life and culture.

If architecture is the skeleton of space, then the floor is the foundation that bears texture and warmth. Shenzhen Bay Cultural Plaza ultimately chose Nedis epoxy terrazzo flooring—a decision that perfectly echoes and brings to life the building’s design philosophy.
The warm, creamy white epoxy terrazzo seamlessly echoes the natural imagery of “raw stones by the sea.” Its fine aggregates softly diffuse a gentle sheen in the interplay of light and shadow, tempering the cold, rigid quality of traditional stone. The flooring of public spaces must balance aesthetic appeal with durability. The epoxy terrazzo flooring project at Shenzhen Bay Cultural Plaza faces a triple challenge: nearly 10,000 square meters of construction area, a rigid 23-day schedule, and stringent quality standards. With the opening date firmly set, there is no room for delays in the flooring work, and the inherent complexity of the task is self‑evident.
Challenges mounted throughout the construction phase: not only did multiple trades—such as ceiling work, wall finishes, and lighting—have to coordinate, but the tight confines of the space made it all too easy for conflicting sequences to arise. Moreover, with the need to stage the exhibition ahead of the opening, certain areas had to be left with temporary access corridors, further constraining both the time and space available for on‑floor operations and severely disrupting the continuity of the construction process.
To overcome the challenges, the construction team implemented a round-the-clock, two-shift operation, clearly defining the responsibilities of each crew and the handover points: during the day, they coordinated with other trades to minimize disruption, while at night they concentrated their efforts on efficient execution. After tireless day-and-night work, the project was completed on schedule and to a high standard, with surface flatness, gloss, and other key metrics all meeting the required specifications, thereby laying a solid foundation for the venue’s successful opening.
